What is West.AF/AM?
Whenever the conversation around how we as Black people define ourselves is brought up, it is typically done with the intention to unify us. However, in the effort to promote unity, our geographical and cultural differences can be inserted into the conversation in ways that actually have the reverse effect than what it was intended for. This is particularly prevalent among descendants of African people who were brought to the Americas via the transatlantic slave trade. Whether you are African American, Afro-Caribbean or AfroLatinidad, there is oftentimes a subtle distinction we all mutually make between us that tends to keep us at arms length depending on the context. With West.AF/AM, we want to continue to acknowledge the differences, positively, while still celebrating and promoting our uniquely shared West African ancestry among Black people, of ALL shades, throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.
